AfterWards: Pakistani Author Bina Shah
February 20 @ 5:30 pm – 6:30 pm
After a year hiatus, AfterWards returns for its first meeting. Attend this special meeting with Pakistani writer Bina Shah.
Bina Shah is a writer and journalist, the author of six novels, including A Season for Martyrs and Before She Sleeps. Her work, which has been translated into numerous languages, focuses on Pakistani culture and society, women’s rights, and freedom of expression.
Shah is a two-time winner of Pakistan’s prestigious Agahi Award for excellence in journalism, was a fellow of the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program, and was awarded the rank of Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Government.
Shah’s AfterWards session will focus on how doctors appear in her writing as symbols of compassion who also struggle with the burden of being the “authority” while trying to process their own emotions in very difficult settings. A wine and cheese reception will be offered.
