Math Accessibility, Part II – Equation Creation Tools
July 24 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Mathematics is foundational to STEM fields, but the focus of accessibility efforts is typically on the written word, overlooking the information conveyed in equations. In Part I – Math as a Language, we shared why accessible content is important for disabled STEM students and professionals. In Part II – Equation Creation Tools, we will explore accessible equation creation tools. Accessible equations use mathematical language that can be recognized and read accurately by assistive technology. We will provide an overview of the mathematical languages MathML and LaTeX and share best practices for creating accessible equations using the tools MathType, EquatIO, and the Canvas equation editor. We will provide a table of Accessible Math Languages, Tools, & Outputs that can serve as a decision tree tool as you develop mathematical content for your courses.
This event will take place on Zoom.
